In the "Car Show" drag racing classes of NHRA Stock & Super Stock, every car and every driver has a story. Bobby Fazio, who competes in both categories, gets up close and personal with the drivers who tell us about their beautiful rides.
It's still weird to me that the Winternationals in Pomona don't kick off the NHRA season but I should probably be glad that it's still on the schedule. It's always been a favorite event of mine and someday hope to blast down that quarter mile with the mountains in the background. They should bring back that old banner that used to stretch over the starting line. We also have action in D2 this weekend at South Georgia motorsports park and there was some #thecarshow racing last weekend in Vegas!
It's the 2024 Gatornationals preview race aka "The Baby Gators" and during yet another annoying rain delay I was able to weasel my way up to the tower and talk with the longtime NHRA announcing legend, Alan Reinhart. He tells us about his Tucson, Arizona roots and how he got started in announcing, the project cars he's currently working on, and also his own accomplishments as a driver!
The 2024 PRO SCAG Shootout was a success for the professional teams that put it together, the sold out crowd that came to watch, but also for the Stock and Super Stock sportsman drag racers that were invited to compete for $30,000! We caught up with the father/son team of Tom and Russ Ghent who spilled the beans on a new motor oil developed specifically with the performance-based class racer in mind.
The highly anticipated Gatornationals preview race had 118 Stock Eliminator cars on the property as well as 86 Super Stock cars. Class eliminations were contested and the weather has been changing every hour on the hour. We have in-car shots, starting line action, and lanes interviews.
It's time for racing season to begin and what better place to break in your Stock Eliminator ride than at a $30,000 winner take all event in sunny Bradenton, FL. There are some real fast cars on the property and the Thursday crowd was impressive!
Randi Lyn Butner has been blasting down the drag strip ever since she was 8 years old in her first junior dragster. As she has matured into the Lucas Oil NHRA Stock Eliminator series, she has definitely chosen what we would call a #thecarshow ride and shares with us her reasons for loving class racing so much. Growing up in a racing family and being around the Glidden family all her life, Randi is no stranger to the winners circle in her own right.
The number 1 qualified car in Stock Eliminator at Pomona belongs in a museum, but we would much rather see #48 of 50 competing at the strip. Richie Pauley acquired the coveted 428 powered 1968.5 in the early '70s where it was sitting in a friend's backyard with a broken motor and a flat tire. One of only a few "street" version lightweights produced, this car had a radio, heater, and sound deadener and draws many potential buyers that Rich has to reject on a regular basis.
There's a reason this car won Best Appearing earlier this year in Las Vegas. Here in Pomona we got a chance to get up close and see the craftsmanship as well as an opportunity to learn some of Jim Grossi's techniques for building a driver-friendly race car. The '69 Corvette changed hands a few times but I doubt any of the previous owners ever knew the full car show and drag race potential that this car had in store.
It's the final countdown. The much anticipated 2023 NHRA In-n-Out Burger Finals in Pomona, CA would be the deciding race for the Super Stock championship and it was still a tossup between Brad Burton, Wyatt Wagner, and Kyle Rizzoli. Enjoy this 40 minute video that covers both lanes walks, starting line action, and midtrack action from days 1 and 2.
How about a 427ci Ford Thunderbolt winding up to 9,000 RPM? While covering Stock & Super Stock action from the 2023 US Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, this classic Ford caught my eye. I had seen it before and even raced against it in the past so I always liked the car and figured it was time to do an up close interview.
Mike and Paula Cotten rolled into Lucas Oil Raceway with their newest addition to the fleet, and turned some heads in the process. After purchasing the car from a friend and having it redone, they were able to pick up the Best Appearing Car award at the 2023 NHRA US Nationals in Indianapolis.
This is the first of the 50 produced lightweight 1964 Plymouth Savoys that was available to the public and it is competing in NHRA Super Stock! Where else would you find a classic gem such as this still doing what it was originally intended to do? Darcy Clarke, who hails from Alberta, Canada, shows off his ingenuity, engine and fabrication skills with this 9 second masterpiece.
In late 1966, Chevrolet released the muscle car that would change the world and set the standard for years to come. A young 25 year-old racer looking for a competitive edge in the NHRA class racing world was about to purchase a big block Chevelle before spotting the new race-ready 302 cubic inch four-speed machine. The gamble paid off resulting in the car and team going down in history.
How about a numbers matching 1967 Z/28 Camaro Rally Sport that isn't being stored in a climate controlled building, but rather, being blasted down the quarter mile in record times? The Maryland native knows his classic Chevy and can spot a phony from a mile away, just ask Barrett-Jackson. Despite appreciating the car's history and value, he still wants to have fun, setting records while jamming those gears in the mandatory 4-speed combination that the Z/28 Camaro package was produced.
Holy moly, a Ford lover's dream! This gorgeous Thunderbolt is driven by one of the pioneers of the big block FE motor who himself has designed some of the integral parts allowed on the car.
